Adopt Ambitious Air Quality Standards into UK Law
We are calling on governments across the UK to adopt bold air quality targets to protect future generations from the health harms of air pollution. Air pollution is a public health emergency. It worsens asthma, COPD and lung cancer, stunts children’s lung growth, and can even affect unborn babies.
The UK has rules in place to limit air pollution, but these rules aren’t strong enough to properly protect our health. For example, governments in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all allow levels of nitrogen dioxide - a pollutant that causes inflammation in our lungs – to be four times higher than the safe level recommended by the World Health Organization.
We need ambitious clean air targets across the UK that align with the World Health Organization’s recommendation to protect lung health.
